How to Calculate Paver Quantity for a Walkway Base

Measure a walkway, convert paver dimensions into coverage, and separate paver count from base, bedding, cuts, and edge-restraint quantities.

A paver order has at least two different calculations: the number of pavers on the surface and the volume of base and bedding below it. The paver calculator can convert area and paver dimensions into a field count, but it does not calculate the aggregate base, edge restraint, cuts, or slope. Keep those quantities on separate worksheet lines.

Start with a plan of the walkway. Measure straight runs, landings, and widened entrances. For a rectangular section, use length × width. For a triangular widening, use base × height ÷ 2. Add the sections before applying a project-specific allowance. Do not use the paver’s nominal length and width to estimate base depth; those are separate layers.

Convert paver dimensions into coverage

Paver dimensions are often in inches. Convert each to feet or calculate square inches and divide by 144. A 12-by-12-inch paver covers 1 square foot. A 6-by-6-inch paver covers 0.25 square feet. A 4-by-8-inch paver covers 32 ÷ 144 = 0.2222 square feet before joint and layout considerations.

Read the product’s installation guidance for joint width, pattern, edge cuts, and package count. A calculator that divides area by nominal face area can be a useful baseline, but a running-bond or herringbone layout will produce more cuts than a simple grid. Keep the waste factor visible rather than presenting the field count as the final order.

Worked example

Suppose a walkway is 18 feet long and 6 feet wide. The surface area is 18 × 6 = 108 square feet. With 12-by-12-inch pavers, the baseline count is 108 pavers. If the layout and edge cuts justify an 11% allowance, the planning count is 108 × 1.11 = 119.88, so buy 120 pavers before package rounding.

Now separate the base. If the planned compacted base is 4 inches deep, its volume is 108 × (4 ÷ 12) = 36 cubic feet, or 1.333 cubic yards before compaction and delivery rules. A 1-inch bedding layer is 108 × (1 ÷ 12) = 9 cubic feet, or 0.333 cubic yard. Do not replace base aggregate with extra pavers; the layers serve different functions.

If the walkway has a 2-foot-wide, 3-foot-long triangular widening, add 2 × 3 ÷ 2 = 3 square feet to the surface and each layer before recalculating. Record the added area as a separate row so the change can be checked.

Common failure modes

Counting pavers by a room-sized rectangle can miss widened entrances and edge cuts. Dividing by nominal face area can also understate a pattern with many small cuts. Another mistake is calling the paver count the “base” quantity; base is aggregate volume, not surface-unit count. Keep every layer labeled with its unit.

Paver products can vary by thickness, shape, color lot, and installation method. A quantity worksheet cannot approve a substrate, select geotextile, design drainage, or confirm accessibility slope. Follow the manufacturer and local requirements.

Compare area math with a dry layout

Place a short dry row at the most visible edge before finalizing the order. Mark the centerline, the edge cuts, the joint width, and the smallest acceptable piece. If the pattern creates a narrow sliver, shift the starting point and recalculate the cut count rather than hiding the problem inside a larger waste percentage. Base depth deserves its own field inspection. A walkway can have a low edge, a soft spot, or a widened entrance that is not visible in the plan view. Use stakes and a string line, or take spot measurements after excavation. If the base is compacted in lifts, ask whether the supplier’s depth is loose material or finished compacted depth. That choice can change the delivery quantity without changing the paver count.

Keep paver, base, bedding, and edge-restraint receipts together. A replacement paver may need the same color lot and thickness, while base aggregate and bedding are selected by different specifications. A single “square-foot order” hides these differences and makes future repair planning harder.
