How to Estimate Gravel for a Walkway Base
Calculate compacted walkway base volume, separate surface stone from base material, and convert the measured quantity into a cautious supplier order.
A gravel walkway usually contains more than one material layer. The compacted base, bedding layer, and visible surface stone can have different depths and densities. Estimate each layer separately, then ask the supplier which selling unit and density apply to the exact product. The gravel calculator is useful once the length, width, depth, waste, and supplier density are known.
Start with a plan view of the finished path. Measure each straight run, widening, curve approximation, and landing. Add the areas or split the path into rectangles and triangles. If the path has a changing cross slope, use separate sections rather than an average depth that hides a low spot.
Separate the layers
For each layer, calculate length × width × compacted depth. Convert inches to feet before multiplying. A 4-inch base is 4 ÷ 12 = 0.3333 feet; a 2-inch bedding layer is 0.1667 feet. Keep the base and surface material on separate purchase lines because a dense crushed base cannot be replaced one-for-one by decorative stone.
Compaction changes the quantity you need to deliver. If the supplier quotes loose volume and the plan specifies compacted depth, ask how the material is sold and what allowance is appropriate. Do not invent a density from a generic internet table. The NIST source is useful for unit and mass relationships, while the supplier’s current ticket or product specification controls the exact gravel basis.
Worked example
Consider a 30-foot-long walkway that is 4 feet wide. The planned compacted base is 4 inches deep, the bedding layer is 2 inches, and the visible stone is 1.5 inches. The plan area is 30 × 4 = 120 square feet.
Base volume: 120 × (4 ÷ 12) = 40 cubic feet, or 40 ÷ 27 = 1.481 cubic yards.
Bedding volume: 120 × (2 ÷ 12) = 20 cubic feet, or 0.741 cubic yard.
Surface volume: 120 × (1.5 ÷ 12) = 15 cubic feet, or 0.556 cubic yard.
If you apply an 8% planning allowance to the base only, the base delivery estimate is 1.481 × 1.08 = 1.600 cubic yards. If the supplier quotes 1.4 US tons per cubic yard for that exact base, the mass comparison is 1.481 × 1.08 × 1.4 = 2.24 US tons before the supplier’s rounding and minimum. Do not apply that density to the bedding or surface stone unless their specifications match.
Curves and widened entrances need their own areas. For a triangular widening, use base × height ÷ 2; for a circular segment, use the actual measured area or a conservative rectangle and record the overage. - Draw the path and label base, bedding, and surface layers.
- Measure each section’s plan area and depth separately.
- Convert inches to feet before calculating volume.
- Confirm whether the stated depth is loose, placed, or compacted.
- Ask for the exact supplier density and selling unit.
- Keep cubic yards and tons as separate outputs.
- Record slopes, drainage stone, edge restraints, and landings separately.
- Round to the supplier’s load size only after the unrounded quantity is visible.
Common failure modes
Using a single depth for the entire path is the most common error. A 4-inch base and a 1.5-inch surface do not produce one interchangeable pile. Another error is converting a supplier’s tons-per-yard quote into bags without checking the package. A third is applying a waste percentage to a compacted quantity without stating whether the percentage is meant to cover compaction, spillage, or both.
Limitations and verification

Compare delivery scenarios
Before you request a quote, make a short table with the unrounded cubic-yard quantity, the compaction or handling allowance, the supplier density, and the load size. A supplier may sell by half-yard increments, by a truck minimum, or by weight. Keep those commercial rules outside the geometric calculation so a change in delivery size does not change the actual material need.
Check the base after excavation and before ordering if the subgrade is uneven. A path that is nominally 4 feet wide may be wider at an entrance, and a low edge can consume more material than the average cross-section suggests. Photograph the grade or use stakes and a string line to record the intended depth. If the base will be compacted in lifts, ask the installer whether the stated depth is finished depth or loose depth.
Do the same check for the surface stone. Decorative stone often has a different density and a different tolerance for over-ordering. If the surface is a color-matched product, a small repair reserve may be worth more than an exact fractional yard. Keep the base, bedding, and surface tickets with the project record.
