How to Estimate Tile for a Kitchen Backsplash

Measure a backsplash as separate rectangles, handle windows and small cutouts consistently, then convert the net area into whole tile boxes.

A kitchen backsplash rarely behaves like one clean rectangle. Upper cabinets stop at different points, a range may create a taller section, and a window can remove a meaningful area. Outlets and switches add cuts but usually do not create useful purchasing savings. A reliable estimate therefore begins with a section drawing, not one rough wall length.

The tile calculator converts a measured area, a documented allowance, and the selected box coverage into whole boxes. It cannot decide which surfaces belong in the project. Build the net tiled area first, keep each addition and deduction visible, and enter the result only after the drawing matches the intended installation boundary.

The Home Depot’s current backsplash guide uses the same auditable structure: split disproportionate wall areas into labeled sections, multiply each section’s width and height, and add the section areas. It also tells the planner to account for outlets and switches and uses a 10 percent addition. Lowe’s tile-estimating guidance likewise supports 10 percent as a general planning reference. That percentage is documented here as an example input, not a promise that every tile, pattern, or room will use the same amount.

Draw additions before deductions

Label every tiled rectangle on an elevation. A standard under-cabinet strip can be one section; the taller area behind a range can be another. Returns at the ends of a cabinet run, exposed side walls, window jambs, or other tiled faces need their own lines because they add surface even when their plan-view footprint is small.

Record all dimensions in one unit before multiplying. When widths are in feet and heights are in inches, either convert the height to feet or calculate in square inches and convert once. NIST Handbook 133 Appendix E provides the exact relationship of 144 square inches per square foot. Do not treat an 18-inch height as 0.18 foot; it is 18 ÷ 12 = 1.5 feet.

Next draw deductions. Deduct a window or other untiled opening when its measured boundary is real and the surrounding returns have been handled separately. Keep the gross section, opening, and net area on different lines. This makes it possible to reverse the deduction if the design later wraps tile into the opening.

Do not automatically deduct outlets and switches as if their tiny face areas reduce the number of tiles purchased. Tile around these devices still comes from full pieces, and the cut can make part of a piece unusable. Mark every device on the layout and let it influence the cut plan and allowance. If a large access panel or other opening truly eliminates full repeatable units, show that as a named deduction rather than hiding it inside a waste percentage.

Worked example

Suppose a kitchen elevation has three tiled sections:

  • Section A is 8 feet wide and 18 inches high.
  • Section B, behind the range, is 3 feet wide and 30 inches high.
  • Section C is 5 feet wide and 18 inches high.

Convert the heights before finding area. Eighteen inches is 18 ÷ 12 = 1.5 feet, and 30 inches is 30 ÷ 12 = 2.5 feet.

Calculate each section independently:

Section A: 8 feet × 1.5 feet = 12 square feet

Section B: 3 feet × 2.5 feet = 7.5 square feet

Section C: 5 feet × 1.5 feet = 7.5 square feet

The gross tiled rectangle total is 12 + 7.5 + 7.5 = 27 square feet.

Section C includes one measured window area that will not receive tile. Its untiled opening is 2 feet wide by 18 inches high, or 2 × 1.5 = 3 square feet. The example assumes no tiled jamb or sill returns; if returns are included in the design, add them as separate surfaces.

Subtract the named opening:

27 − 3 = 24 square feet of net tiled area.

The drawing also includes four outlet or switch cutouts. They are marked for layout review but are not deducted from the purchase area because each cut is made from tile that must still be bought.

For this documented scenario, apply a 10 percent allowance after the net area is known:

24 × 1.10 = 26.4 square feet of planned coverage.

The selected product label states 5.5 square feet per box. Convert coverage to the actual purchasing unit:

26.4 ÷ 5.5 = 4.8 boxes.

Round upward because the example assumes boxes cannot be split. The result is 5 boxes after the documented 10 percent allowance. Five boxes provide 5 × 5.5 = 27.5 square feet, leaving 1.1 square feet beyond the allowance-adjusted target. That remainder comes from whole-box rounding; do not add it again as another percentage.

Cross-check the geometry in square inches. The net 24 square feet equals 24 × 144 = 3,456 square inches. Calculating all three gross sections and the window directly in inches produces the same 3,456 result. This independent check catches an incorrect feet-and-inches conversion before it reaches the box count.

Measurement checklist

  1. Draw an elevation of every wall that will receive backsplash tile.
  2. Mark the countertop, cabinet bottoms, range area, windows, doors, side returns, and termination edges.
  3. Divide the tiled outline into non-overlapping rectangles and give each one a letter.
  4. Measure each width and height at the location where tile actually starts and stops.
  5. Convert all dimensions to one unit before multiplying.
  6. Add every tiled return, reveal, sill, or narrow side face as its own surface.
  7. List large untiled openings separately rather than erasing them from the drawing.
  8. Mark outlets, switches, plumbing penetrations, and other cut locations without assuming they reduce purchases.
  9. Confirm whether tile continues behind a removable range or appliance and record that decision.
  10. Verify the chosen pattern, orientation, focal line, borders, and termination pieces.
  11. Read square-foot coverage from the exact product box; do not infer it from a nominal tile name.
  12. Document what the allowance is intended to cover: cuts, layout loss, breakage, visual selection, or repair stock.
  13. Divide the allowance-adjusted area by box coverage and round each distinct product upward separately.
  14. Check shade, caliber, production-lot, return, and replacement details before purchase.

A simple worksheet should retain gross additions, deductions, net tiled area, allowance, box coverage, exact boxes, and rounded boxes as separate rows. If the backsplash uses a field tile, accent strip, and edge trim, give each material its own worksheet. Surplus field-tile coverage cannot automatically satisfy a missing linear trim piece.

Common failure modes

  • Multiplying one total wall length by one height. A range, cabinet break, window, or return can change the height or boundary.
  • Mixing feet and inches as decimals. Eighteen inches is 1.5 feet, not 0.18 foot.
  • Overlapping rectangles. Adding a tall range section on top of an under-cabinet section can count the same area twice.
  • Forgetting returns. Window reveals and end returns add area and often create extra cuts.
  • Deducting every outlet. A small opening changes a cut without necessarily saving a purchasable tile or box.
  • Deducting a window but omitting tiled jambs. The opening and its returns are different worksheet lines.
  • Applying the allowance before fixing the drawing. A percentage does not repair a missing section or wrong unit conversion.
  • Using tile face area instead of box coverage. Purchasing follows the selected product’s labeled package coverage.
  • Pooling unlike products. Field tile, mosaics, accents, and trim have separate units and rounding.
  • Rounding down boxes. A partial calculated box is not available when the seller supplies only full boxes.
  • Adding waste twice. Whole-box rounding already creates some extra coverage beyond the percentage-adjusted target.
  • Treating 10 percent as universal. Pattern, tile dimensions, cut distribution, breakage risk, and repair-stock decisions can require a different documented plan.

Limitations and verification

This guide is a quantity method for a dimensioned backsplash surface. It does not determine whether the wall is suitable for tile, select tile, mortar, adhesive, grout, backer, waterproofing, movement accommodation, edge profiles, electrical-box extensions, or safe tool methods. It does not approve work around outlets, switches, plumbing, heat sources, or appliances. The Home Depot source supports section-by-section measurement, attention to outlets and switches, and its stated 10 percent addition. The Lowe’s source supports 10 percent as general tile estimating guidance. Neither source guarantees that the percentage fits every layout, nor does either replace the selected tile and setting-material instructions. The NIST source supports the unit conversions used in the example.

Recalculate when a cabinet, appliance, window treatment, tile size, pattern, or product changes.
